Brief CV:
I received a BS degree in Chemistry from St.Peter's College, Jersey City, NJ, and a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.
From 1967 to 1993 I worked as a research biochemist at Merck & Co., a major pharmaceutical firm, in Rahway NJ.
In 1993 I retired to pursue an increasing interst in computerized Natural Language Understanding (NLU), and
since then have focused mainly on finding the best way to represent information in logical form
for use in NLU. The current technology most suited for that function is a formal (logic-based) ontology,
and I now have taken the job title of "ontologist". I worked as an ontologist from 2000 to 2001 at
VerticalNet, a dot-com startup in Pennsylvania, as part of a team
constructing an ontology of commercial products and services; from 2004 to 2007 I worked
as an ontologist at MITRE Corporation, a national consulting firm in Information Technology.
At MITRE my main tasks were to assist in constructing ontologies and to evaluate proposals related to ontology
development and use.
My research interests include Natural Language Understanding, Foundation Ontologies, and
Semantic Primitives.
I have authored or co-authored several papers in biochemistry and in ontology, and have taken out
several patents (which were assigned to Merck)
I am currently working from home on my research concerning issues in developing a Foundation Ontology suitable to support broad and general Semantic Interoperability
